Health Promotion Material Assessment
The “Take Care of Your Body and Your Baby” pamphlet does several things well. It uses images to help expectant mothers identify that this pamphlet is for them. It is well organized, with color-coordinated sections for the trimesters and various headings. The word choice is appropriate for an audience with low literacy because it is conversational and avoids jargon. However, this pamphlet has several weaknesses, such as it contains a lot of information, which may overwhelm the audience. The body text is also tiny, and the space on the page is not well utilized as there are text-heavy and blank sections. Additionally, there is no summary emphasizing the call to action and no attempt to engage the audience with questions. Finally, this pamphlet is very generic and is not tailored to an audience of expectant parents at the Nassau County WIC Center. Though it depicts a group of racially diverse pregnant people, it only shows heterosexual relationships, and both younger and older expectant parents are absent. Additionally, the pamphlet is in English, but Spanish is a common language in Nassau County.
These weaknesses have the potential to hinder the success of this pamphlet. The small text may be hard to read for visually impaired people, and the large blocks of text may be overwhelming for other readers. The lack of diverse representation of gender identities and ages in the images may make some readers feel excluded from the intended audience. The lack of an interactive component may result in some readers leaving the pamphlet without remembering its intended purpose.
If a few modifications are made, I would recommend this material for people at the Nassau County WIC Center. I would first request that the text be pared down so it is less cluttered, and the font size could be increased, which would make the pamphlet more accessible and more appealing. I would also rearrange the text to make better use of the space on the page. The pamphlet would also need a stronger call to action so that every reader knows precisely what to do after reading it. Perhaps there could also be links to healthcare providers, mental health resources, and more information to inspire pregnant people to take charge of their health during pregnancy. Finally, it would need to show more diversity among the sexual orientation and ages of the expectant parents and be translated into Spanish to meet the needs of people at the Nassau County WIC Center.
